It's no secret that at Love Cocoa we are big fans of salted caramel. There is something incredibly satisfying about finding the perfect balance of salty and sweet, especially when it is combined with the rich aromas of our luxury chocolate. Salted caramel is our best-selling bar flavour, our best-selling chocolate truffle flavour and our best-selling biscuit flavour; we think it's safe to say that our customers love this heavenly combination as much as we do.
So where did salted caramel come from?
To understand the rise of salted caramel, we must first trace its origins back to the early 1970s. It was during this period that French pastry chef Henri Le Roux, the mastermind behind Maison Le Roux in Brittany, began experimenting with caramel. First in the form of a salted butter caramel alongside crushed nuts, Le Roux transformed the classic caramel into something entirely unique and unforgettable. By the 1990s, the salted caramel frenzy was spreading across the world.
Why does salted caramel work so well?
The enchantment of salted caramel lies in the artful balance between contrasting flavours. The richness and sweetness of caramel are beautifully offset by the subtle and savoury notes of salt. The salt acts as a flavour enhancer, intensifying the sweetness and adding depth and complexity to the caramel.
Why do we love using salted caramel in our chocolate?
It's versatile, decadent and pairs perfectly with milk, dark and white chocolate. The contrast of textures, with the soft, gooey, buttery caramel meeting the velvety smoothness of chocolate, creates an irresistible taste that we will come back to time and time again. Salted caramel seamlessly combines traditional elements with a contemporary twist, bridging the gap between familiarity and innovation that Love Cocoa champions as a modern chocolatier. Salted caramel has cemented its place in the culinary world as a timeless classic that transcends trends and captivates generation after generation.
